Day 112 – Week 16 – 16 mins

Ah – back to reality.

We flew in to London to be greeted by rain and a ’short-staffing’ of baggage handlers, which meant a more than two hour wait for our luggage. And I think we were the lucky ones, there were several planes which came in after us who would have had a much longer wait. Welcome to the UK!

Did my usual strength and stretching routine this morning, and it was quite comforting to have all my usual bits and bobs at my disposal – resistance strap, medicine ball etc. Really felt it though, given I have had a week off from these particular exercises.

And then I set to the unpacking, washing and cleaning that needs to be done before my next lot of visitors arrive this afternoon for a week….at least this time we don’t have to sleep in the cellar!

Day 111 – Week 16 – 16 mins

Last day in the pool today – and as we are flying out mid-afternoon, I had to get in there first thing in the morning, before it got too hot.

Fortunately – it was also before all the kids got in the pool, and I had it to myself. Bliss. Found my rhythm and thoroughly enjoyed my final swim. I’m going to miss it when I’m home. Then it will be back to the usual routine….

Day 110 – Week 16 – 16 mins

This swimming business is getting easier. I’ve decided that it’s not really about strength or technique, but it’s all about breathing. As a teenager I could swim laps for an hour without struggling for breath, but I am obviously well out of practice, because that is what I am finding the most difficult.

But today – it is slightly easier, and I’m sure that if I could swim regularly I’d soon get back into the habit. Unfortunately this is the penultimate day of the holiday – so the swimming will soon be coming to an end…

Tried touching my toes again today – and it wasn’t any better. Try it! See what I mean? You wonder how on earth you ever got down there….

Day 109 – Week 16 – 16 mins (16)

Family party over and back to our quiet little apartment about half an hour away. It is still hot – roasting, in fact, and I am having trouble functioning.

It was half past six in the evening before it was cool enough for me to get in the pool and do my minutes today. But apart from avoiding children and their inflatable swans, all passed without incident.

I really do like to swim, so it is no great hardship. But then I decided to get out of the pool and tried to touch my toes. Oh my goodness – I really don’t suggest you leave it 10 years in between attempts – you may be shocked at how rubbish you are at it!

Day 108 – Week 16 – 16 mins (16ish)

Ah holidays – nothing is better designed to prevent you from exercising.

Today’s group/family activity was to hire a yacht  laden with cava and fine food and spend 8 hours sailing around the Mar Menor in north-east Spain. Now I challenge anyone to go for a jog in that environment!

Fortunately – we were surrounded by water – and with much encouragement from those on board, I attempted to do my 16 minutes of swimming about. With no-one having a stop watch to hand, I had to guess, but I reckon I got pretty close to the required amount of time – with some extra bursts of activity whenever those on board screamed out “jellyfish” and I had to scoot away from that particular spot in a hurry.

The thing to remember here, is that particular 16 minutes of exercise, is exercise I would never have done in a million years while on holiday before this experiment. So I like to think that though it may SEEM like I’m not really doing a lot, it is an awful lot more than I would have done before, and that has to make some kind of difference!

Of course the amount of cava I am drinking totally wipes out any advantage I may have…but as I have often said, adjusting my eating and drinking habits was never going to be part of this experiment.
